Cotton Bag Printing Guide: DTF vs Screen Printing vs Embroidery

How to Print Your Logo on a Cotton Bag

When ordering custom printed cotton bags, the most common question is: which printing method should I use? The answer depends on your design, quantity, budget, and the look you want to achieve. At Tote Wala, we offer three printing methods: DTF printing, screen printing, and embroidery. Here's how to choose.

DTF Printing (Direct to Film)

DTF is a modern digital printing method where a design is printed onto a transfer film and then heat-pressed onto the fabric. It supports full-colour, photo-quality prints with no colour limit.

Advantages:

  • Full colour — gradients, photos, illustrations, and complex logos all work
  • No minimum colour restriction — print exactly what your designer made
  • Works at low MOQ — even a single piece can be printed
  • Fast turnaround — no screen setup time
  • Soft hand feel when applied correctly

Limitations:

  • Slightly less cost-effective at very high volumes vs screen printing
  • Print area is fixed (unlike embroidery, it sits on top of fabric)

Best for:

D2C brands with full-colour logos · Illustrated designs · Photo prints · Low to medium quantities (25 to 500 pcs) · Wedding bags with couple photos or illustrations · Any design with more than 2 colours

Screen Printing

Screen printing is the traditional method of applying ink directly to fabric through a mesh screen. A separate screen is made for each colour in the design. It produces vibrant, durable prints that last for hundreds of washes.

Advantages:

  • Most cost-effective at high volumes (500+ pcs)
  • Very durable — print lasts longer than DTF at the same wash count
  • Ink sits into the fabric for a natural, matte finish
  • Ideal for simple, bold logos and text

Limitations:

  • Each colour requires a separate screen — setup cost applies
  • Not suitable for complex illustrations, gradients, or photos
  • Minimum order recommended: 200+ pcs per design to offset setup cost

Best for:

Corporate orders at 500+ pcs · 1–2 colour brand logos · Text-heavy designs · High-volume retail packaging · Event giveaways where cost per piece is critical

Embroidery

Embroidery stitches the design directly into the fabric using thread. It creates a premium, textured finish that looks and feels luxurious. No ink, no transfer — just thread sewn into cotton.

Advantages:

  • Most premium and durable of all print methods
  • Thread outlasts the bag — effectively permanent
  • Elevates perceived brand value significantly
  • Works especially well on 330 GSM canvas bags and pouches

Limitations:

  • Higher cost per piece vs DTF and screen print
  • Not suitable for very small text or fine details
  • Limited colour blending — works best with bold logos and monograms

Best for:

Luxury fashion brands · Premium corporate gifts · High-end jewellery pouches · Monograms and initials · Wedding bags where a handcrafted feel is desired · Long-lasting brand merchandise
