How to Design the Perfect Custom Cotton Bag for Your Brand: A Step-by-Step Artwork Guide
Share
Ordering custom printed cotton bags is exciting — but getting your artwork right before printing is crucial. A file that looks great on screen can print poorly if it's low resolution, wrong format, or missing a transparent background.
Step 1: Decide What Goes on the Bag
- Logo only, or logo + tagline?
- One-sided print or two-sided?
- What colours is your logo in?
- Any illustration or pattern in addition to the logo?
- Website URL or social handle to include?
Simpler designs almost always look better on cotton bags. A clean logo with a tagline consistently outperforms a complex layout.
Step 2: Choose Your Print Method (Determines File Format)
DTF Printing (MOQ 25–500 pcs)
- Format: PNG with transparent background (preferred) or PDF
- Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI at actual print size
- Colour mode: RGB
- Background: Must be transparent — white background will print as white
Screen Printing (500+ pcs, 1–2 colours)
- Format: Vector — AI, EPS, CDR, or SVG
- Specify Pantone (PMS) codes if brand colours need to be exact
- No gradients — screen printing cannot reproduce gradients
Embroidery
- Send your logo as PNG, PDF, or vector
- We create the digitising file — no extra action needed
- Very fine details and thin lines don't embroider well — we'll advise if needed
Step 3: Design at the Right Size
Standard print area on 14×16 inch tote: 10×10 inches (front). Most brands use 8×8 inches for a balanced look. Design at 1:1 scale at 300 DPI minimum.
Step 4: Use the Right Colours
Cotton bags print on a natural/cream base unless dyed. This means:
- White elements won't show on natural cotton — they won't print
- Light yellow and beige may not show up well
- Dark colours (navy, forest green, black, maroon) show most vividly
- If white is critical, consider a dyed (black or navy) bag
Common Artwork Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Low-res JPEG screenshot of a logo
- ❌ White background on PNG for DTF
- ❌ Designing at 72 DPI instead of 300 DPI
- ❌ Very thin lines or fine serif fonts for embroidery
- ❌ Forgetting to outline text in vector files
